San Antonio, Texas, is very age-friendly -- considering it is also known as the "Sun Capital of the South." Due to its warm climate mostly year round, many Northerners have moved to San Antonio to retire or semi-retire. This fact was proven out when on May 24, 2018, San Antonio was ranked by the U.S. Census Bureau as number one city in America for the greatest percentage of population growth for all U.S. cities over 50,000 in population. As a result, those numbers -- which represents an increase of over 24,000 new residents a year in San Antonio -- bodes well for more jobs and more services available to Seniors age 50 and up.
That's one reason why we see more companies getting certified as "Age-Friendly" employers over the past 5 years. Also, I have noticed that the city of San Antonio takes great care of their roads, streets, and highways, along with reasonably priced water, electric, and other utility services and the cost of living is low compared to other big cities around the country. Also, transportation services are excellent and it's very easy to get around town here in San Antonio. We do have rush hour congestion on the major highways (like any major city) going around and through San Antonio, like I-10, I-35, and Hwy 1604 on the north side. But you don't get the super dense, bumper to bumper "crawl and wait" 30 minutes to an hour in traffic -- like you do in Dallas or Houston. Outside of rush hour, I can get anywhere in the Metroplex, in any direction, in about 30 - 40 minutes -- which covers a good 20 to 25 miles from north to south and from east to west. Other pluses for San Antonio are their excellent hospitals, the University of Texas Medical Center, and easy access to Senior community centers and to many beautiful public libraries across the city. And don't forget the wonderful museums, theme parks, athletic events, downtown historic River Walk, the Alamo, The Botanical Gardens, great shopping and restaurants, jogging and walking trails, and great family parks. You name it -- San Antonio has it.
So in my book, San Antonio is not only "Age-Friendly," it's downright "People Friendly'" as well. So now you know why we are number one in population growth in the whole USA!
